EU-Western Balkans Cluster Policy Learning and Matchmaking Event, Zagreb, 22-23 November 2018

The Zagreb Innovation Center hosted an international event titled EU-WESTERN BALKANS Cluster Policy Learning and Matchmaking event. This was a two-day event that has gathered more than 66 cluster representatives and policy makers from the European Union and the Western Balkan countries. The aim was to create new opportunities for co-operation for cluster stakeholders from the European Union and the Western Balkan countries in the context of enlargement and strengthening of international economic cooperation. The whole gathering was organized by the European Commission – DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts, the City of Zagreb and the Zagreb Innovation Center.
The event started with the exchange of best practice on cluster policies and programs, and was opened by Dr. Ulla Engelmann, Head of Cluster and Social Entrepreneurship at DG GROW, then Mr. Mario Antonic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Crafts Mr. Frane Sesnic, Director of the Zagreb Innovation Center.
The key topics of the conference concerned transnational cluster collaboration, the role of clusters in strategies of smart specialization and cluster management challenges. A special emphasis was put on matchmaking aimed at launching new transnational cooperation opportunities for clusters of the Western Balkans, the European Union, Ukraine and Turkey. Clusters – participants of this event – represent more than 4,000 small and medium-sized businesses working in the agro-food and food industry, IT, automotive, tourism, textiles, pharmaceuticals and energy industries.
Transnational cluster collaboration creates new opportunities for companies and small and medium-sized enterprises to create new business co-operation.
The host of this event is the Zagreb Innovation Center, while a special contribution was given by Hub385, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb and Feroimpex.
